FIGHTING CANCER WITH NUTRITION
Spirulina is richly supplied with the blue pigment phycocyanin, a biliprotein which has been shown to inhibit cancer-colony formation.
The high levels of chlorophyll in spirulina may explain its ability to stop cancer colonies from forming. Foods and herbs that contain high levels of chlorophyll show pharmacological evidence of cancer prevention. If cancer cells are stopped before they can form colonies, your body’s naturally occurring cancer cells won’t be able to run amok and develop into symptomatic cancer. Spirulina has been shown to treat a type of oral cancer called OSMF (oral submucous fibrosis).
Spirulina, as it turns out, is a cholesterol buster. Researchers in Clinical Nutritionsearched PubMed and Scopus, online databases of peer-reviewed studies, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effect of spirulina supplements on cholesterol and triglycerides.
The seven RCTs in total showed quite an effect “in reducing plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and triglycerides while elevating those of HDL-C [good cholesterol]. This meta-analysis showed a significant effect of supplementation with spirulina in reducing plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL-C, triglycerides and elevating those of HDL-C.”
BOOSTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
A recent University of California/Davis study, focused on 40 seniors, mean age 63 years, who took 500mg spirulina daily for 12 weeks. The team measured immune function via complete blood cell (CBC) counts and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) enzyme activity, with results showing that over half of all participants receiving spirulina had higher IDO activity after 6 and 12 weeks. In particular, this effect was striking in men, with over 75% of study subjects manifesting the benefit.
Further, spirulina was associated with a steady increase in corpuscular hemoglobin, thereby aiding to “ameliorate anemia and immunosenescence in older subjects.”
MANAGING BLOOD SUGAR
Researchers have found evidence that spirulina can help type 2 diabetes patients manage their blood sugar levels, among other benefits. What the researchers found is that those with type 2 diabetes who took spirulina for two months had improved blood sugar and lipid profiles. The researchers concluded that “these findings suggest the beneficial effect of spirulina supplementation in controlling blood glucose levels and in improving the lipid profile of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus.” In some cases, it has outperformed popular diabetes drugs, including Metformin.

And in an Oregon State University study of rats that had induced strokes, the group fed spirulina showed brains lesions that were 75 percent smaller than those in control groups.

By Activating Adult Stem Cells And Reducing Oxidative Damage
Adult stem cells, needed for tissue repair, are usually quiescent (non-dividing). But they can be activated by the body’s need for more cells to maintain tissues, disease or tissue injury. As their stores decline, however, the body’s repair and regeneration processes come to a standstill.
In PLoS One, scientists say that adult stem cells are present in many tissues including skin, muscle, adipose, bone marrow and brain. But their ability to stay viable and proliferate is hampered by inflammation. The condition of high inflammation in the body leads specifically to neuro-inflammation “shown to be a potent negative regulator of stem cell and progenitor cell proliferation in the… brain.”
In this study, to determine if spirulina could protect the proliferative potential of neural stem cells from acute systemic inflammatory insult caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a controlled diet or one supplemented with spirulina was provided for 30 days. All groups were exposed to LPS. Whereas the group without the spirulina experienced fewer stem/ progenitor cells “the diet supplemented with spirulina was able to negate the LPS-induced decrease in stem/ progenitor cell proliferation.”
Combine With Nutraceuticals
In a second set of studies, the same scientific team examined spirulina in combination with blueberry, green tea, vitamin D3 and carnosine on the proliferation of stem cells in bone marrow. The combination of nutrients, herbs and super foods promoted “proliferation of these cells” and protected against a “negative influence” of the pro-inflammatory messenger chemical tumor necrosis factor-alpha on neural stem cell proliferation. “A diet enriched with spirulina and other nutraceuticals may help protect the stem/progenitor cells from insults.”
Decreasing neuro-inflammation “reversed the agerelated cognitive decline and increased neurogenesis” in the aged groups.
A 2010 experimental study investigated spirulina’s potential to slow dementia. Results showed that the spirulina-treated groups had better passive and avoidance scores when it came to learning. Deposits of amyloid β-protein (Aβ), linked with Alzheimer’s disease, were “significantly reduced.” Oxidative damage was much less in the spirulina group. Glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity was higher. Spirulina “may prevent the loss of memory” by lessening Aβ protein accumulation, reducing oxidative damage and augmenting antioxidant activity.
Spirulina might be worth remembering, simply because of its positive impact on stem cell regeneration, to include as an ingredient in one’s smoothie and green juice drink each morning.
